Job Description:

Behavioral Health Assoc-Elmhurst Emergency Dept - Naperville, ILThis position functions independently to coordinate with clinical staff in the Emergency Department (ED) at Elmhurst Hospital to provide care to emergency department patients in a behavioral health crisis.-- Provides direct care to patients with behavioral health disorders. ----Participates in treatment planning and implementation.-- Documents according to department/organization procedures.-- Ensures the safety and well-being of these patients by maintaining a safe milieu.

  • Partners with the Charge RN, Assessment Specialist, Psychiatrists and APPs in the ED to coordinate care for the behavioral health patients until admitted or discharged.
  • Interacts with behavioral health patients in the ED. This may include, but is not limited to psychoeducational groups, individual and group activities teaching coping skills and educating on the discharge process to assist in stabilizing them for discharge.--
  • May interact with family members to explain next steps in the process.
  • Participates in treatment planning by working with interdisciplinary team to identify patients' problems, needs and strengths, suggests modifications to treatment plan based on observation of patient behavior and provides input into discharge planning.----------
  • Monitors and reports patients' progress and communicates information to charge person on assigned shift and family members. --------
  • Ensures patient safety by providing one-to-one supervision. Rounds are conducted and precautions records completed in real time.-- Precautions records are accurately labeled.--
  • Completes patient, program, and department documentation.------
  • Orients new patients to milieu by establishing a rapport with patients and families and making necessary introductions.------
  • Provides assistance with activities of daily living, appropriate to patients' age, needs and developmental level as assigned and supervised by nurse in charge.-- May need to provide physical care such as assisting with the bathing and toileting of geriatric patients and other patients with special needs.---- ----
  • Maintains a safe, orderly, and therapeutic physical environment for patients.------
  • Performs clerical and administrative assignments to support patient care, department and organization operations.------

    Education, Skills and/or Experience Required:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a Behavioral Health related field
  • Maintain information as highly confidential
  • Ability to exercise self-control in potentially volatile situations, such as being verbally or physically confronted in a threatening or aggressive manner
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and willingness to seek supervision
  • A minimum of three years of behavioral health experience

    Education, Skills and/or Experience Preferred:

    • Master's Degree in a Behavioral Health related field
    • Minimum five years of previous psychiatric experience
    • Familiarity with medical and psychological terminology
    • Skills in teaching or assisting with activities of daily living
    • Prior experience with therapeutic limit-setting, along with milieu management

      Licensure and/or Certification Required:

      • A valid driver's license is required if the incumbent is selected to perform related duties at an off-site location. If the incumbent uses their personal vehicle, the incumbent must maintain automobile liability coverage as required by law and evidence of such coverage may be requested.
      • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification within 90 days of start date into position
      • Current CPR Certification issued by either American Heart Association or Red Cross
