Must-Have: Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or Registered
Sleep Technologist Description: A sleep technologist provides
comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders,
including in-center and home sleep apnea testing. They perform
diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and provide comprehensive
patient care. They offer sleep-related education and support to
patients and families. A sleep technologist is credentialed in
sleep technology. Key Responsibilities: Document patient arrival,
interactions, and consent for testing. Review and verify
departmental orders for testing and insurance verification. Review
patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity.
Acquire and document additional information from the patient or
ordering provider, if needed, to ensure appropriateness of testing.
Perform routine positive airway pressure interface fitting,
desensitization, and education. Prepare patients for testing
according to policy, selecting appropriate equipment per order.
Document routine observations during testing according to policy.
Correlate physiologic data and behavioral observations to
facilitate scoring and interpretation of data. Perform equipment
and physiologic calibrations to ensure quality data and monitor
data quality to ensure recording is artifact-free. Perform
equipment cleaning and disinfection, ensuring infection and quality
control according to policy. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills
necessary to provide age-specific care for all populations seen in
the sleep lab. Implement appropriate interventions, including
patient safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions. Follow
procedures to verify the integrity of data and completeness of test
documentation and patient forms. Develop and maintain effective
working relationships; communicate professionally and respectfully
with all internal and external customers. Assist in requesting and
maintaining testing supplies; participate in routine department
tasks and maintain orderliness of work area. Demonstrate
proficiency in distinguishing sleep states and identifying clinical
events according to professional guidelines. Score sleep/wake
stages and clinical events utilizing professionally accepted
guidelines. Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and
clinical event data and analyze complex situations and policy.
Support and participate in quality and performance improvement
initiatives. Perform and demonstrate proficiency in performing
ancillary testing, including oximetry and actigraphy. Follow
procedural protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency and Maintenance of
Wakefulness Testing. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary
to provide age-specific care for all populations seen in the sleep
lab. Follow policy to document routine observations during testing.
