Mohs Histotech, Part-Time

POSITION DETAILS:

  • Part-Time, 20 hours per week
  • Monday- Friday; Various Shifts; Must be willing to work early shifts starting at 6:00am/7:00am
  • Location: Naperville - City Gate Lab

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Under the general direction of the Physician/Mohs Surgeon, Practice Manager and Mohs Laboratory Supervisor; the Mohs Technician performs histology including cutting, staining, and cover slipping of frozen sections, using cryostat. Freezes and cuts specimens appropriately in order to assist physician in diagnosis and treatment according to laboratory policies and procedures and in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Mohs Technician is responsible for secondary steps in Mohs processing (40%)
  • Cutting/Sectioning tissue for analysis on the microtome
  • Prepares quality slides for microscopic diagnosis on surgical specimens for clinical of reference use
  • Perform routine H &E stains for microscopic diagnosis evaluation by the physician/Mohs Surgeon
  • Cover slipping, slide labeling of the slides

  • The Mohs Technician is responsible for maintenance on laboratory equipment (30%)
  • Prepares and maintains adequate stock of reagents, standards, and control materials for the performance of testing at assigned workstations and notifies supervisor of any shortages or problems
  • Recognizes laboratory equipment performance/problems and takes necessary corrective action
  • Initiates and documents troubleshooting and problem solving to resolve issues
  • Analyzing Mohs specimens/slides for accuracy
  • Stores Mohs specimens and related materials (blood, slides, etc.) according to protocols for location and duration
  • Responsible for ensuring the laboratory is inspection ready at all times.

  • Performs other functions as a Medical Assistant within the practice as needed (30%)
  • Contact patient to review dermatology preoperative checklist / Mohs pre-operative checklist as well as schedule patient for surgery
  • Assist directly in all dermatologic surgery including excisions, Mohs micrographic surgery and reconstruction, and melanoma in face surgery with delayed reconstruction
  • Bandage and detail wound care with patient / family
  • Maintain pathology log for biopsies
  • Maintain referral log for Mohs surgery

License / Registration / Certification

Histology Technologist (HT) OR Histology Laboratory Technician (HLT) highly preferred.

Level of Education

High school diploma or equivalency

Field of Study

Preferred degree in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science or Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution in accordance with CLIA

Foreign educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from the IERF (International Education Research Foundation).

United States educated candidates must provide a detailed original transcript

Years of Experience

Previous experience in a Mohs setting required

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA)

Ability to analyze the specimens/slides for accuracy, acceptability and to act on in a timely manner

Ability to troubleshoot and perform maintenance on laboratory equipment

Ability to work in a stat environment

Basic computer skills required
