Job Description:

Insight Global is seeking a motivated and self-driven Electrical Design & Test Engineer to join our team in Naperville, IL. This role is responsible for designing and developing user interface and sensor electronic assemblies on both flexible and rigid circuit boards as well as creating test solutions for the same assemblies in support of production. This person generates schematics, writes test plans, develops microcontroller firmware, and creates unique test solutions for transitioning the assembly into a production test environment.



Role & Responsibilities:

Design user interface products, such as a capacitive touch, utilizing a combination of schematic capture and firmware development tools. Understand capacitive touch user interface design concepts such as self-capacitance, mutual capacitance, sliders, wheels, etc.

Understand microcontroller architecture including how to integrate into a design and utilize timers, interrupts, A/Ds, PWMs, etc.

Write firmware targeted for small microcontrollers. Write and step through C code using a debugger and document and explain your software code to others.

Develop test solutions for the production team. These solutions include programming tests into a Checksum system on our SMT line, programming a Cirris Systems tester, and designing other custom test solutions.

Design microcontroller-based test solutions to validate your own products, or products designed by other engineers.

Assist operations personnel in the design and development of test solutions throughout the factory including robotic-based test solutions.

Debug test solutions directly and provide direction to production personnel throughout development cycle.

Identify which aspects of design need to be 100% tested on every assembly. Knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) for analyzing test solutions.

Understand differences between designing high volume products and developing a test solution that validates each individual product and understand statistical data analysis.

Estimate timelines for development work based on requirements and existing project workload and keep track of time spent on various projects.

Study device specifications for electronic parts and select parts based on performance and cost trade-offs.

Research new technologies for development of test solutions and product design; and proposes ideas to advance our capabilities to stay ahead in the market.

Understand digital and analog circuitry: biasing a transistor, various methods to drive LEDs, physically interfacing a microprocessor to other portions of a circuit, ways to protect circuits from ESD/EMI, etc.

Understand basic serial communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and others. Experience using serial protocol validation tools and oscilloscopes to qualify communication busses.

Control firmware/software releases with revision control using a software repository system such as GIT.

Check other engineers schematics, board layouts, and fabrication drawings for completeness and accuracy.

Verify product design. Perform bench level testing of prototypes, executes design validation (DV) and production validation (PV) tests.

Create technical documents based on project needs such as a Statement of Work, Schematic, Fabrication Print, Logic Flow Diagram, Hardware/Software Architecture, Test Plans and Reports.

Familiarity with creating Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA) for a design, including both possible hardware and software failures.

Interface with internal departments (manufacturing, quality, lab, sales, and marketing) to ensure design objectives are met. Provide product information, engineering samples and technical advice on assigned programs.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary that demonstrate the ability to express complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.

Support Molex Quality Management by following approved policies and procedures


Bachelors Degree in electrical engineering technology, Electrical Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science

6 years of Design Experience

Experience with Capacitive touch for various styles of user interfaces

Understanding of Flexible printed circuit technologies

Schematic Capture Tools (Altium Design)

Embedded Software Development (C++, VB.net, Python)

Software Compliers/Debuggers: Cypress, Altium, Mentor Graphis, Texas Instruments, or Microchip/Atmel IDE
Associates Degree in Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science

3+ years of Design Experience

Experience with embedded software & writing Microcontroller code

Embedded C Development

Experience Testing Product & Developing Product Test Solutions

Experience with Schematic Capture tools

Circuit Debug Tools (Multimeters, Oscilloscopes, Ardvark, etc.)

Product Development including Schematic Design
